Bogota, Colombia, has a population of 8,566,926 people. Many of them whom struggle to live and work in Bogota's hard environment. What do I mean by hard? Well, Colombia is filled with gangs, drugs, and even kidnappings everyday. So how do you get away from all the danger? Run away, maybe move? How about live in a sewer? During the 1990's, the
Colombian Cold War was at its turning point. Death Squads
began terrorizing or killing the Colombian citizens. Which is one of the reasons the kids decided to live in the pipes in the first place, and to get away from the stress above ground. The story of the sewer kids became popular in Europe and American, camera crews and reporters came rushing into the streets of Bogota. The story was popular for a awhile but soon died down like any other news story, making people think the problem was solved. But, about 6 months after the story became popular the death squads had begun coming into the pipes and shooting or dousing the kids in gasoline. Colombia's government tried to control the death squads but, police men and soldiers were partly responsible for the killings. So, the problem of the sewer kids just lingered, while bigger stories caught the attention of the public.
The world is filled with the poor and vunerable from Africa to South America, even some in the United States. The point is, the world needs help and everybody can do something. We could donate supplies or even become missionaries in third world countries. Everybody has a problem and everybody could do something to resolve these problems through God.
